If you own a color printer, you’ve likely had to replace one of four ink cartridges used in your device. Cyan, magenta, yellow, and black have long been the standard color model used to produce high-quality prints of any kind. Whether you’re printing on ink-jet or laser printers, these four colors are used together to reproduce the entire color spectrum on the page.

This color model continues to play an important role in commercial printing, but it’s struggling to deliver the dynamism and digital enhancements that help printed materials compete for the viewer’s attention.

This was the inspiration for the new Xerox Iridesse Production Press. CMYK coloring is still used to produce beautiful, high-quality printed images, but the Iridesse Production Press combines this four-color printing press with metallic gold, silver, clear, and white specialty inks that can be integrated into any print job. This combination creates new visual effects that give Xerox customers a new, innovative competitive edge.

Most importantly, these effects are now available with the Xerox Iridesse in a simple, cost-effective format. You can calculate the cost of a print job directly on the device using built-in software, making it easy to price specialty inks for your customers. This gives businesses easy, affordable access to professional print services that outperform the rest of the market.

How It Works

A typical printer has four stations for each of the CMYK colors. The Xerox Iridesse Production Press expands those stations from four to six, creating space for metallic gold and silver to be added to the kit.

What’s most unique about this setup, though, is the one-pass ability of these printers to print all six colors in a single pass. This allows for faster printing that accelerates workflows and improves the cost-effectiveness of creating this type of printed asset.

The Xerox Iridesse Production Press allows you to utilize this dry ink printing in many different ways, from layering under or over CMYK prints to creating unique iridescent palettes. Dry ink can also be used to create spot effects, metallic gradients, and other specialty enhancements, as well as for adding dimension or texture to an image.

The white specialty ink allows for higher color accuracy and the ability to print CMYK elements on different-colored paper (black, for example). The printer itself allows for up to seven passes through the printer to layer the white ink and improve color accuracy.

Clear, meanwhile, allows the printer to add a sheen over the paper, giving it a different texture. Multiple passes through the printer can be used to create depth and dimension with clear ink.

Further adding to its versatility, the Iridesse can print on a wide range of print stock, from white to colored and rustic to gloss at up to an impressive 120 ppm.
