In Case You Missed Us: Cyber Security on Tech Talk With KTRS

Last week The Big 550 KTRS was live at Citizens National Bank in Maplewood, and we got to join them for Tech Talk on location. Fun fact: SumnerOne headquarters is located just one mile down the street in the historic Scullin Steel Co. building. The Guy Phillips Show was ready to talk technology with our expert, Jeff Groby.

Guy was ready to go and was asking questions about the latest password mishap with Twitter. Last week, Twitter advised that all 330 million users should change their passwords after a bug exposed them. Jeff was able to give some information about what happened with the attack and agreed that it's better to be safe than sorry. If you use Twitter, you may want to change that password! Kudos to Twitter for being transparent with your users and doing your due diligence to protect them.

Protecting Your Business with Cyber Security

We're glad you asked. Guy Phillips brought up the question of what businesses can do to protect themselves from security issues. That just happens to be our specialty at SumnerOne. Some of the tips Jeff mentioned were: making sure your firewall and anti-virus are up-to-date and making sure you're educating your employees about cyber security.

As we've mentioned before, making sure your employees are educated critical consumers is your first-line of defense. Jeff hit on the growing workplace trend of having a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy. Many companies are adopting this policy to allow employees to bring their own personal laptops and tablets into work, but that brings a whole new set of risks. These risks can even carry over to companies that don't adopt a BYOD policy because of the popularity of smart phones.

Adopting a BYOD Policy for your Office?

  • Define the policy: Who can bring devices, which types of devices, etc.
  • Look into directing the devices to a guest network
  • Educate your employees about being a critical consumer
  • Mandate strong passwords

Does your office have a BYOD policy? We would love to hear more from you. Give us a call this Friday at KTRS and be sure to tune in to hear what we have to say about Ransomware. Turn your radio to The Big 550 KTRS (550AM) this Friday afternoon at 4:20 to catch our next segment of Tech Talk!
