Facial-Recognition-SoftwareFacebook can recognize us in photos, and our faces can unlock our smartphones, facial recognition software is in play all around us. Our IT expert, Jeff Groby, joined Guy Phillips and Heidi Glaus for Tech Talk on The Big 550 KTRS to discuss the positives and negatives that can go along with the growing software changes.

Facial Recognition Software in Society

Earlier this year, we did a Tech Talk segment on biometric data, and facial recognition software falls into that category. Facial recognition is a biometric application that can uniquely identify or verify a person by comparing and analyzing patterns based on a person's facial contours.

Biometric data is more secure than a traditional password. Often, when people think of a biometric password, people think of their thumbprint. Last week on the show, Jeff mentioned that facial recognition is even more secure than your thumb when it comes to protecting your device and information. Facial recognition software is becoming so advanced that it's being used in different security processes, on social media, and safeguarding our electronics. The software matches thousands of points on the user's face and even can spot who they are looking for regardless of weight gain, facial hair, glasses, and other changes.

On the show, Jeff stated that there are positives and negatives to the usage of the software. Because of how new the technology is, there are few laws in place to protect end users against misuse. As technology continues to evolve and advance, lawmakers are in the process of making decisions to determine what is lawful and unlawful when it comes to the software.
