In Case You Missed Us: Social Media Security on Tech Talk on KTRS

Find me on:

Social-Media-SecurityThere once was a day when Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter didn't reign supreme in the social media world. MySpace was the big man on campus back in those days. It seemed like you either had a MySpace account or you hadn't dabbled in social media just yet. The social media scene has taken over the internet in the past fifteen or more years, and with that comes a few security concerns. Our IT expert, Jeff Groby, joined the group over at The Big 550 KTRS for Tech Talk to chat about the growing concerns with social media.

Growing Social Media Security Concern

Millions of people use social media every day. With that being said, there are a lot of inactive social media accounts out there too. Jeff's best piece of advice if you were a past social media user is to log back in and deactivate your account if you don't wish to have it anymore. Cyber criminals can use your old accounts to gather important information on you. Older platforms like MySpace have had issues with old information being used against the account owners.

In the earlier days of social media, not all end users were as well versed about the negative side of social media. Before Facebook and the other big social platforms, users shared more freely. We didn't fully understand the dark implications that could come with sharing too many details online. People shared intimate details of their lives on social media back then that nowadays they wouldn't even dream of posting. As they say, and Jeff even reiterated, don't publish things online that you don't want other people to find. Once something is out on the internet, its impossible to take it off completely.

How to Securely Manage your Social Media Account

Many people use multiple different social media platforms now. Juggling your different accounts and managing your profiles can be difficult. Here are a few security tips from our experts about how to protect yourself and your account:

  • If you have more than one social media account, be sure to use different passwords to secure each.
  • Managing multiple passwords can be difficult. Using a password manager app can help make things a little easier. We mentioned a few trusted resources in a past Tech Talk segment.
  • Use two-factor authentication when logging on to your social media accounts.
  • Always be sure to log out of your online profiles when using a public computer.
  • Don't share any details on social media that you wouldn't want available to everyone on the internet.

If recent years have been any sign, social media is here to stay. It's important to be cautious of what you're sharing and be vigilant of any changes you may see. Keeping up with the news about social media account breaches and taking proper measures to protect yourself is key to being a smart end user on social networking websites.
