In Case You Missed Us: Webcam Security on Tech Talk with KTRS

Last week on Tech Talk our IT expert, Jeff Groby, joined the group over at The Big 550 KTRS to talk about the dangers of webcam security. When you think about it, almost every computer, cell phone, or tablet has them these days, but what do you really know about your device's webcam? Trust us when we say, you're not being overly cautious by putting a post-it over your camera.

Are Webcams Dangerous?

Finding a device that doesn't come with a camera in 2018 is like finding a needle in a haystack. As we've said before, just about anything that connects to the internet is at risk for security issues. That means webcams too!

KTRS Producer, Matt Dorman, brought up a great point while on air about when Mark Zuckerberg was photographed with his webcam covered up. If the creator of Facebook is covering his webcam, you know there is some cause for concern! Sure, Zuckerberg is a higher target for cyber criminals, but if he's doing it there must be a reason. Webcams can be a great way for cyber criminals to gain access to your professional and personal life.

How to Secure Your Webcam

  • If you are not using the webcam for video conferencing, make it a point to turn it off and cover it up.
  • Only use webcams from reputable companies that you recognize.
  • If on a mobile device or tablet, be aware of which apps you have granted camera and microphone access to.
  • Make sure your security software is up-to-date.
  • Be sure your wireless network has strong security settings in place to prevent outsiders from connecting to your Wi-Fi.

While it is true that it's mostly computers that are at risk for webcam breaches, it doesn't mean its impossible for other devices. The best general rule of thumb is to follow Jeff's advice and be aware of who or what has access to your cams.
